I am a Latin-American Jazz Vocalist from Motown. My earliest memories come to me in song format, and contain such artists as Ray Charles, Nat Cole, Stevie Wonder, Mancini, and especially the
Great Brazilian Gurus, A.C. Jobim, and Sergio Mendes, Jorge Ben, and many more. As a child, I sang every riff that came over the radio, and became acquainted
with many different influences. I'm forever surprised at how influences combine and recombine, like DNA, stealthily beneath the radar, only to pop up in surprising
new incarnations.
As I reached my teens and twenties and began to write music, the influence of this cross-cultural, primordial sea kept me from falling clearly into any specific genre,
so that my first CD "It's Lush" (2002), which contained only one of myb compositions, was purely Jazz. Last Spring in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico,
recuperating from pneumonia, my life's work suddenly seemed clearer. So this CD forced itself on me, during my final year of the Bachelor of Music, Jazz
program at VIU, with lots of encouragement from people like Bryan Stovell, who also pointed a young Diana Krall in the right direction,
from Keith Copeland, the great Jazz Drummer who encourages me from afar, and greg Bush, our beloved Jazz Composition Instructor, who never allowed me a moment's rest between
compositions, and who always expected more.
Nearly all of my compositions are in both Spanish and English, a legacy of being from a Hispanic family...
